Why Your Charts Suck and How to Fix Them
Building effective data visualizations is an increasingly important skill. As data professionals the amount of data and the speed at which it is arriving is constantly growing. At the same time our business users are increasingly time poor in a world filled with distractions and shiny things. With social media, instant messaging, conference calls and emails if the message that you are trying to convey is not clear, engaging and easy to understand it will not get the attention that it deserves. Clicking next, next, next, finish on a chart wizard is not the way to build engaging data visualizations. In this presentation we will look at what you need to consider to build clear and engaging data visualizations and what pitfalls you should avoid.

Data Modelling for Business Professionals
It can be relatively easy to get started using Power BI, however most people quickly discover that there is a lot more to it than first meets the eye. DAX is a functional language that is very similar to the Excel functional language, but before you can properly learn DAX you must first understand the principles of Data Modelling. In this session you will learn the principles of data modelling and how these are all part of the process of extracting value from your data using the DAX language.

Real-Time Analytics with Power BI
Power BI helps you build appealing visualizations of your data. With the ever-growing footprint of data, it is equally important to get real-time insights into your data. It can be as simple as monitoring a single metric or viewing real-time sales performance across multiple locations. Power BI real-time streaming enables you to stream data and update dashboards in real-time. Any time-sensitive data can be a source of streaming, like IoT sensor devices, social media sources, service usage metrics etc.

In this session: 1. I will dive deep into real-time analytics with Power BI. 2. Show how to build streaming tiles in Power BI Dashboards. 3. Demo using Power BI REST APIs. 4. Demo using Azure Event Hub and Azure Stream Analytics.

How to Build Your Own Super Model
While you can do some pretty amazing things with DAX expressions, at the end of the day nothing beats having a correctly structured data model. Having the right data model can make everything else a breeze. Having the wrong data model can make result in slow performance, convoluted expressions or potentially even block you from achieving your desired output all together. In this session we will look at the basic theory of building a good data model for Power BI and look at some demos of a few different modelling patterns and how to implement them to solve real world business problems.

A Business Focus on Visualisation
This session is a demonstration more in terms of walking through a completed working example rather than diving into the technical how-to details.

The example is of a global company operating in Australia and headquartered in the UK.  The company's publically available key financials are packaged into simple Power BI storyboard report.

You'll think you're on this company's web site or in thier PowerPoint template - but your not.  Power BI's custom visual theme features are at work to replicate branding.  Similarly Power BI's bookmarking is used to replicate the same navigation menu styles and function as used on this company's website.

With Power BI you will see meaningful interactive charts showing key business financials but in the normal business visual playbook styling of the web or PowerPoint.

Examine and critique the interactivity of charts with drill-downs and data exploration.

This is for business folk who want to understand what Power BI can really look like in a branded business visual setting.  Also a look at ways to select chart types that best communicate financial reports including for Income Statements, Balance Sheet and Cash Flows.

To have this done for your company; chat to me after the session or contact via https://fastlanebi.com

The DAX language is very powerful and can be learnt by any competent Excel user. I will aslo show examples of writing and deploying measures to the Azure stack and some of the APIs I use to solve these functions. This is targeted to users who may have a need to upgrade their exiting models and real life examples of what to expect and the cost in development time. This case study is centered around the logistics industry and the result of this development is power BI reports embedded into a custom website.
